Songbird Ceberano on the canvas
SONGBIRD Kate Ceberano has taken South Australian artist Mariana Mezic under her wing by posing for this year’s Archibald Prize.
“We’re birds of a feather ... Mez is how I imagine it would be if I were mates with Frida Kahlo,” Ceberano said, referring to the legendary Mexican painter.
The Adelaide Cabaret Festival’s former artistic director discovered Ms Mezic’s “amazing” talent through Instagram, with their social media exchanges leading to a friendship and Ceberano suggesting they “do an Archibald”.
Ceberano spent a day sitting for Ms Mezic, 43, of Kanmantoo in the Adelaide Hills, which resulted in not one, but two portraits.

Mariana says she draws the type of women she’s inspired by: “Brave, strong, fearless women. Tough-eyed women not to be messed with. Drawing women like that inspire me to keep on being brave in my work”.
